Council meeting is set for May 8, 2008
Present: Mike McKenzie, Sally Adams, Tim Mitsumori,
Kathy Doyle, Bill Bradford, Mike Henderson, Janet Lee, Randy Gonzalez, Jeannie
Graham, Scott Davis, Marsha Bordas, Ann Cowan, Susannah Kilbourne, Larry Sykes
Absent: Michael Brown
Introductions
Agenda
- Larry Sykes made a motion and Bill Bradford seconded
that: We approve the agenda as amended. The motion passed.
Minutes
- Jeannie Graham made a motion and Sally Adams seconded
that: We approve the minutes from the April 10, 2008 SBDM Council
meeting as amended. The motion passed.
Community Input
- Janet Lee asked how testing was going. Mr. McKenzie
said that testing was going outstandingly. The students were working hard
on the tests, the teachers proctoring the test are doing a great job and
Sally Adams, Dianna Carr, and Stephanie McDermott did excellent work on the
preparation and organization of the testing.
- Jeannie Graham inquired about the status of additional
school cameras. Mr. McKenzie reported that funds are available and
Lafayette’s camera installation should be completed by the beginning of the
next school year.
Drug Testing
- Mr. McKenzie reported that the legal issues involving
student athletes have been resolved. That federal grant funds will be
available to cover cost of testing.
- Copies of drug testing policies from Henry Clay High
School, Dunbar High School and Tates Creek High School were given to the
Council for review.
- Janet Lee made a motion and Larry Sykes seconded
that: We establish a committee to research drug testing of student
athletes and to report back to the Council with recommendations.
Stadium Update
- Mary Browning Wright, COO of FCPS and Scott Hawkins,
Director of High Schools spoke to the Council about the status of the
stadium replacement.
- They explained that funding for the stadium is not the
issue and the Board is behind the project. It is the relocation of the bus
garage that needs to be resolved.
- The District is negotiating the purchase for a track
of land to relocate the Spring Hill bus garage. They hope to have the garage
moved before the beginning of the next school year.
- The best case scenario will be that the 2008-09 season
will be played at Lafayette and then the next one or two seasons will be
played off field.
- The SBDM Council requested that the Council and the
Lafayette community be kept informed of the stadium replacement process.
Exam Schedule
- The spring exam schedule was reviewed with the
Council. Mr. McKenzie will share this with the staff shortly.
- Marsha Bordas made a motion and Mike Henderson
seconded that: We approve the exam schedule as presented. The
motion passed.
Science Textbook Request
- Larry Sykes made a motion and Mike Henderson seconded
that: We approve the science textbook request in the amount of $159,500
contingent upon the textbook allocation from the District is at least
$159,500. The motion passed.
- Larry Sykes made a motion and Marsha Bordas seconded
that: We authorize the use of the $19,000 remaining in the 2007-08
textbook funds to purchase science textbooks prior to May 16, 2008.
The motion passed.
Budget Request
- Marsha Bordas made a motion and Mike Henderson second
that: We approve the use of $27,527 remaining in supplemental duty
fund in the following way:
- $14,234 to purchase technology requested by
departments that were cut from their SCIF budget requests
- the use of the remaining $13,293 will be decided by
the Council at the May 8th meeting

Consultation
- Pursuant to KRS.61810.1F Larry Sykes made a motion and
Mike Henderson seconded that: We move into executive session to consult
on science positions. The motion passed.
