Lafayette High School began its ESL Program at the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year. It offers courses in English as a Second Language , which helps students with limited English proficiency. Our classes prepare students to enter regular English classes through learning and practicing English conversation, reading, writing, and listening. We also offer classes in ESL social studies, Spanish for native speakers ,and math/science content.
Students are tested at the beginning and at the end of the school year. This testing allows the school and particularly the ESL staff to place students in appropriate classes and to observe their progress in English over the period of a school year.
Each ESL student is assigned to an ESL manager who is one of the ESL teaching staff. The ESL managers serve as mentors and advisors to the ESL students. Their role is to help ESL students plan toward graduation and to make sure that students are succeeding academically in both ESL and regular classes. See Academic Information.
Graduation is based on the attainment of a certain number of credits . (For more information on graduation credits , please check with our guidance office). Our ESL classes count towards English credits , thus fulfilling the English requirement for graduation. Students who are new to English will have a schedule of 4 or 5 ESL classes along with Algebra and 2 electives. Intermediate and advanced students will take more regular classes and fewer ESL classes
