Lafayette dances past Woodford Co.
Generals off to best start since '81

Lafayette Coach Mike Harmon sings. He dances. He says he'll do just about anything to motivate the Generals.
After last night's 34-15 win over visiting Woodford County, Harmon danced on the 50-yard line with homecoming king and senior Brian Crutchfield.
It was a dance of joy because the Generals are 5-1 for the first time since 1981 and undefeated in the district.
"They want to make a fool out of me," Harmon said. "But I'll be a fool any time to keep winning like this."
No fooling.
The Generals got off to a slow start in the first half, gaining just 23 yards on 18 carries.
They managed just two first downs, both in the second quarter on runs by Michael Murray and Elrazor Sharp.
But special teams play turned out to be more than a little special.
"Some of the kids were sitting around last night watching the Florida State-Louisville game and they came to me this morning and said, 'Coach, you were right. Special teams and defense do win games,' " Harmon said.
Immediately after Woodford got on the board first with a 30-yard Matt Brown field goal, Lafayette's Murray returned the kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown.
Lafayette's defense then did its part to open the second quarter. The Jackets went for it on fourth-and-4, but Spencer Fain was in the lane to intercept an Eric Sobolewski pass and return it 62 yards for the TD.
"It got tipped and then it was in my hands and I was running," was all Fain could remember of his score that gave the Generals a 14-3 lead. The junior had two interceptions.
Woodford's Mike Woolfork got the score to 14-9 just before the half with a 9-yard run.
Fain made a 49-yard catch to set up Lafayette's lone score in the third quarter, a Myron Russell 1-yard run.
Even though Lafayette's offense sputtered at the start, the Generals' defense more than made up for it.
Bilal El-Amin led them with seven tackles. Crutchfield added six. He had two hurries on Sobolewski and forced a fumble in the first half.
Lafayette's defense stifled the pass-happy Woodford offense, limiting it to 19 yards in the first half and one completion. Sobolewski was picked off three times overall and completed just three of his 14 pass attempts for 25 yards.
His 35-yard TD run with 7:13 to go in the fourth quarter pulled Woodford within six, 21-15, and made things interesting in the final minutes.
On third-and-10 at his own 37, Sobolewski launched a pass to P.J. Anthony, who picked up the first down.
But the play was called back for offensive pass interference. That took the air out of the Jackets, who finished with 255 yards of offense.
Then Lafayette's offense kicked into high gear. Sharp came alive in the fourth quarter, rushing for 46 of his 89 yards.
His 12-yard scoring run and Kevin Minke's kick put the game out of reach, 28-15, with 1:18 to go.
The Generals -- generally marching fiends -- finished with just 134 yards on 47 carries. They gained 58 yards in the air.
But statistics aren't as important to Harmon as wins. The second-year coach has been using history as a motivator before each game.
"I tell them, 'It's been X number of years since we did this or that,' " he said. "I tell them we can make history every time we step on the field."
